Treatment of Low-Level Radioactive Waste in Erwin and Memphis, TN

Studsvik Processing Facility Erwin, LLC

At Studsvik's facility in Erwin, Tennessee, USA, radioactive waste is with a method called THORSM (Thermal Organic Reduction) and was developed and patented by Studsvik. The process significantly reduces the volume and weight of ion-exchange resins and other organic and aqueous waste thereby considerably reducing the cost of storage and final disposal.

The resulting end product is considerably more chemically stable than the original waste. After treatment, the reduced waste is sent to a final disposal facility on the generator's behalf or returned to the generator for interim storage. The lifecycle cost of ion-exchange waste management, including processing, transportation and disposal makes it worthwhile for the customer to utilize Studsvik to treat their waste.

Commercial low-level waste in the USA is mainly deposited in one of three currently operating disposal facilities, one in Barnwell, South Carolina, and one in Clive, Utah and the other in Hanford, Washington. However, the available disposal capacity is being limited through federal and state legislation and regulations.

Studsvik is licensed to operate the facility around the clock, seven days a week. The capacity of the facility depends on the nature of the waste and corresponds to about 40,000 to 60,000 cubic feet per year - a significant portion of the available ion-exchange resins disposition needs of the US commercial market.

Studsvik's THORSM process is becoming an ever increasing vital component of the U.S. radioactive waste management program.
